About HGH (somatropin)

Human growth hormone (HGH), also referred to as somatropin, is a 191-amino-acid recombinant protein with the identical primary sequence to endogenous human growth hormone (hGH). It is produced via recombinant DNA technology in microbial expression systems and purified to research grade. Optic Labs supplies HGH as a high-purity lyophilised powder in 15iu vials, packaged for in vitro and preclinical laboratory research.

Each batch is independently HPLC-tested for purity and identity, with certificates of analysis available on request.

Growth hormone has been one of the most extensively studied proteins in endocrine research for several decades, with a published literature spanning receptor pharmacology, IGF-1 axis signalling, body composition and metabolic effects in animal models and human study populations. Optic Labs supplies HGH for laboratory research only — not for human consumption, clinical use, or any therapeutic application.

Research background

Recombinant human growth hormone is one of the most well-characterised proteins in modern endocrinology. Published preclinical and clinical research has examined HGH in the context of:

  • Growth hormone receptor (GHR) binding, JAK2/STAT5 signalling and downstream gene expression
  • Hepatic IGF-1 synthesis and the GH/IGF-1 axis
  • Body composition (lean mass, adipose mass) in animal models and clinical study populations
  • Lipid metabolism, lipolysis and glucose homeostasis
  • Bone density and connective-tissue research
  • Sleep architecture and recovery-research models
  • Pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic studies across multiple recombinant somatropin preparations

Reconstitution and handling

HGH is supplied as a lyophilised powder and must be reconstituted with bacteriostatic water before use in any laboratory protocol. The recombinant protein is sensitive to mechanical shear — add the diluent slowly down the side of the vial rather than directly onto the powder, and swirl gently to dissolve. Do not shake.

A 15iu vial reconstituted in 1.5mL of bacteriostatic water yields a working concentration of 10iu/mL; 3mL yields 5iu/mL. Exact volumes should be calculated for each protocol — our reconstitution calculator guide walks through the maths. Reconstituted vials should be stored refrigerated at 2–8°C, protected from light, and used within approximately 14 days; recombinant proteins degrade faster in solution than smaller synthetic peptides.

Comparisons and related research compounds

Recombinant HGH is the upstream protein in the GH/IGF-1 research axis. Researchers may also be interested in compounds that act upstream of, or alongside, endogenous growth-hormone release:

  • CJC-1295 + Ipamorelin — GHRH analogue + GHRP combination, growth-hormone-releasing research peptide pairing
  • Tesamorelin — stabilised GHRH analogue, lipolysis research
  • AOD-9604 — fragment hGH analogue (residues 176–191), fat-loss research
  • MOTS-C — mitochondrial-derived peptide, metabolic research

Frequently asked questions

Is HGH legal in Australia?

Recombinant human growth hormone (somatropin) is registered with the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) as a Schedule 4 prescription-only therapeutic medicine in Australia under multiple brand registrations. Optic Labs does not supply HGH as a therapeutic, prescription or compounded product, and HGH from Optic Labs is not intended for personal, clinical or therapeutic use. Optic Labs supplies HGH strictly as a research-grade material for in vitro and preclinical laboratory research only. For a detailed overview of peptide legality in Australia, see our guide to peptide legality and TGA compliance in Australia.

What is HGH?

HGH (human growth hormone, also called somatropin or rhGH when produced recombinantly) is a 191-amino-acid protein hormone with the same primary sequence as endogenous human growth hormone. In published research it has been investigated extensively for its effects on body composition, IGF-1 axis signalling, lipid metabolism, bone metabolism and recovery-related processes.

How does HGH differ from research peptides like CJC-1295, ipamorelin or tesamorelin?

HGH is growth hormone itself — a full 191-amino-acid recombinant protein. CJC-1295 and tesamorelin are GHRH analogues, and ipamorelin is a GHRP — they act upstream of the pituitary to stimulate endogenous growth-hormone release. The research literature treats them as different tools that probe different parts of the same axis: HGH provides exogenous protein directly; GHRH/GHRP compounds modulate endogenous release.

How is HGH supplied?

Optic Labs supplies HGH as a lyophilised powder in a sealed glass research vial at the 15iu size (approximately 5mg by mass). Each vial is shipped with a tamper-evident seal. Certificates of analysis showing HPLC purity testing are available on request.

How much bacteriostatic water do I mix with a HGH 15iu vial?

Reconstitution volume depends on the working concentration required by the research protocol. As a starting reference: 15iu in 1.5mL of bacteriostatic water yields 10iu/mL; 15iu in 3mL yields 5iu/mL. Add the diluent slowly down the side of the vial and swirl gently to dissolve — do not shake, as recombinant proteins are sensitive to mechanical shear. Our reconstitution guide covers the calculations.

How should reconstituted HGH be stored?

Unreconstituted vials should be stored at 2–8°C and protected from light. Once reconstituted, the solution should be refrigerated at 2–8°C and used within approximately 14 days. Recombinant proteins are more stability-sensitive than smaller synthetic peptides — do not freeze and thaw, and minimise warming-cooling cycles. For full storage protocols, see our peptide storage guide.

Where does Optic Labs ship to?

Optic Labs ships Australia-wide from Sydney, NSW. Standard dispatch is next business day on orders received before the daily cut-off. International shipping is not currently offered.
