About selank

Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide developed at the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Molecular Genetics in the early 1990s. Its sequence (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro) is an analogue of the endogenous immunomodulatory tetrapeptide tuftsin (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg), extended with the C-terminal Pro-Gly-Pro tripeptide that the same research group used to stabilise semax. The Pro-Gly-Pro modification confers strong resistance to enzymatic degradation, giving selank an unusually long functional half-life for a small peptide. In published research, selank is one of the most extensively studied anxiolytic and immunomodulatory research peptides in the Russian and Eastern European scientific literature, with research interest in GABAergic transmission, BDNF and tuftsin-like immune signalling.

Optic Labs supplies selank as a lyophilised powder in 10mg research vials, third-party HPLC tested to >99% purity. The product is distributed Australian-domestic from Sydney, NSW, for in vitro and laboratory research applications. Selank is supplied strictly for laboratory research, development or analytical use and is not intended for human consumption.

Research background

Selank was developed by the same Russian research group that produced semax, with the explicit aim of generating a stable analogue of the immunomodulatory tetrapeptide tuftsin. Tuftsin itself is rapidly degraded in plasma; appending the Pro-Gly-Pro extension produced a peptide with substantially extended functional activity while retaining tuftsin-like binding properties. Selank is registered as a medicine in the Russian Federation but, in the Australian and Western research context, it is studied as a research-use compound.

  • GABAergic transmission: in published rodent research, selank has been investigated for effects on the GABA-A receptor system and on benzodiazepine-like anxiolytic-type behavioural readouts in elevated-plus-maze and open-field paradigms.
  • BDNF and neurotrophic signalling: in brain-tissue research, selank administration has been associated with changes in BDNF expression in the hippocampus, providing a candidate mechanism for its observed effects on stress-related behavioural models.
  • Tuftsin-like immunomodulation: in cell-culture and animal-model studies, selank retains tuftsin-like activity at receptors expressed on macrophages and other immune cells, with research interest in cytokine balance and innate immune responses.
  • Enkephalin system interactions: in published research, selank has been associated with elevated plasma and central enkephalin levels, paralleling the enkephalin-related findings reported for semax.
  • Stress and anxiety models: in rodent research, selank has been examined in models of acute and chronic stress, with research interest in the behavioural correlates of anxiety and the molecular signatures of stress-axis activation.
  • Cognitive performance research: in animal models of learning and memory, selank has been investigated for effects on attention, working memory and behavioural flexibility, often in combination with semax.
  • Pharmacokinetic stability: in published research, the Pro-Gly-Pro modification gives selank substantially longer functional activity than the parent tuftsin tetrapeptide, supporting its position as one of the more practically usable anxiolytic research peptides.

Reconstitution and handling

Selank is highly water-soluble and reconstitutes readily. A common laboratory approach for the 10mg vial is reconstitution in 2ml of bacteriostatic water to yield a 5mg/ml working stock, or in 1ml for a 10mg/ml stock. The bacteriostatic water should be drawn into a sterile syringe and injected slowly down the inside wall of the lyophilised vial, allowing the peptide cake to dissolve passively rather than through agitation. Reconstituted selank should be aliquoted, refrigerated at 2–8°C and protected from light, with research stocks typically used within 30 days. For dilution maths across alternative volumes, see our reconstitution calculator guide. For long-term storage protocols, see our peptide storage guide.

Commonly stacked research peptides

In published research and laboratory protocols, selank is often examined alongside other nootropic, anxiolytic and central-nervous-system research compounds:

  • Semax — nootropic heptapeptide developed by the same Russian research group; commonly co-investigated with selank in stress and cognitive performance models.
  • DSIP — delta sleep-inducing peptide examined alongside selank in studies of sleep architecture, anxiety and stress recovery.
  • PT-141 — MC4R-preferring melanocortin agonist co-investigated with selank in central nervous system and behavioural research designs.
  • Epithalon — telomere and longevity research peptide commonly grouped with selank in anti-ageing study designs.
  • NAD+ — co-investigated in neuronal energetics and longevity research alongside selank.

Frequently asked questions

Is selank legal in Australia?

Selank is not a scheduled substance under the Australian Poisons Standard, but it is also not registered as a therapeutic good in Australia. Optic Labs supplies selank strictly for laboratory, research and analytical use only, not as a therapeutic good. For a full overview of how the Therapeutic Goods Administration treats research peptides in Australia, see our peptide legality and TGA compliance guide.

What is selank?

Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide analogue of the immunomodulatory tetrapeptide tuftsin, extended with a C-terminal Pro-Gly-Pro group for enzymatic stability. It is one of the most extensively studied anxiolytic and immunomodulatory research peptides in Russian and Eastern European scientific literature. For more detail, see our selank anxiolytic research guide.

What does selank do in published research?

In published research, selank is studied for its effects on GABAergic transmission, hippocampal BDNF expression, tuftsin-like immune cell signalling, central enkephalin levels, and behavioural readouts in rodent stress and anxiety models. These observations are research findings only and do not constitute therapeutic claims. For a research-level summary, see our selank research guide.

How does selank compare with semax in research?

Selank and semax were both developed by the same Russian research group as Pro-Gly-Pro-stabilised heptapeptides, but they target distinct research areas. Selank is primarily examined for anxiolytic-like and immunomodulatory effects via the GABAergic and tuftsin-related pathways. Semax is more often investigated for nootropic and neuroprotective effects via the BDNF/NGF axis. The two are frequently co-studied in stress and cognitive performance models.

How is selank supplied?

Optic Labs supplies selank as a lyophilised powder in 10mg glass research vials. Each vial is sealed with a tamper-evident closure. Certificates of analysis showing HPLC purity testing are available on request.

How much bacteriostatic water do I mix with a 10mg selank vial?

For a 10mg vial, 2ml of bacteriostatic water yields a 5mg/ml working stock; 1ml yields a 10mg/ml stock; 5ml yields a 2mg/ml stock. Choose a volume based on the concentrations required by the research protocol. For a worked example with unit conversions, see our reconstitution calculator guide.

How should reconstituted selank be stored?

Reconstituted selank should be stored at 2–8°C, protected from light, and used within approximately 30 days. For longer-term storage, aliquoting and freezing at −20°C or below is preferred to limit freeze-thaw degradation. Full handling protocols are covered in our peptide storage research guide.

Where does Optic Labs ship to?

Optic Labs ships Australia-wide from Sydney, NSW. Standard dispatch is next business day on orders received before the daily cut-off. International shipping is not currently offered.
